Keep those pearly whites shining bright at any age

10/17/2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio, (October 17, 2011) — October is National Dental Hygiene Month and Delta Dental of Ohio is reminding people at any age that having good dental hygiene is important to overall health.

Good dental hygiene should begin early on with children visiting the dentist when they turn 12 months or within six months after the first tooth comes in. It’s also important for parents to help young ones brush and floss daily.

“Establishing a dental hygiene routine and a dental home can help children learn the importance of oral health and become comfortable with going to the dentist,” said Dr. Jed Jacobson, chief science officer and senior vice president of Delta Dental. “This will help them develop healthy habits they can carry on into their adolescent and adult years.”

Dr. Jacobson also emphasized the importance of dental check-ups throughout life, encouraging people to consult with their dentists to develop an exam schedule customized to fit their unique oral health conditions.

“It’s important to make the time, even when your schedule is busy, for regular dental examinations,” said Jacobson. “They should be a priority, since early detection is critical in terms of oral health and overall health issues.”

In addition, the relationship between oral health and overall health can be especially important for older adults.

“Older adults should inform their dentists about any health conditions they have, as well as all medications they are taking, since both could have an impact on their oral health,” said Jacobson. “Plus, the dentist can advise them about how effective oral health management can have a positive impact on other health conditions and quality of life.”

Practicing good dental hygiene, such as brushing, flossing daily and visiting the dentist regularly, can help keep your smile at its very best for years to come. Fluoride mouth rinses can also help keep your oral hygiene in check, but parents should remember to follow the appropriate age recommendations listed on the product.
